Cuddly Cthulhu: The Guardian UK Reviews Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom

Great news in our inbox this morning! David Barnett of the Guardian UK gives Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom a glowing review! And we’ve been alerted that there may be a Howard Lovecraft sighting in The Independent this weekend, so we’ll certainly keep our eyes peeled.

In the meantime, please be sure to pre-order your copies and thanks again for your support!

UPDATED: Read Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom Chapter 1 Absolutely FREE

Welcome to the blog, dear reader. I hope you had a happy, safe, and refreshing holiday season. Things were a little hectic here at MacPherson Manor, but they were also pretty wonderful. Rebecca and I had a terrific time with our sons and family, but it was over far too soon, and we are once again buried to our cephalopodic necks (yes, Cthulhoids have necks) in writing projects. But that is a good thing.

Tweet of Truth

Yesterday whilst reading my timeline on Twitter (don’t judge me), one of my friends Re-Tweeted this interesting bit of information from mainstream comic writer Ed Brubaker:

@brubaker If my Fatale promoting tweets bugs you, you probably don’t understand how hard it is to sell an indie comic.

If a writer who has seen considerable commercial success is having difficulty selling his creator-owned book, perhaps you can begin to appreciate how nearly impossible onerous and frustrating it is for the rest of us. Indie comic creators make comics out of a deep love for the medium, and we rarely see a dime for our efforts. And, to add insult to injury, we often find that some mouth-breathing dunderhead(s) is/are scanning and pirating our books on the internet.

So… with this in mind, I have decided to make the first chapter of Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom available for free download.

The Fine Print

All I ask (and I realize this is a lot to ask) is that if you enjoy this special preview, please pre-order the book and tell your friends and family about it. If you have a blog, Facebook or Twitter page, share a link to this blog post.

You can pre-order Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom from your friendly neighborhood comic shop with the Diamond Order Code JAN12 0814. Or, if you prefer, you can pre-order from your favorite local bookstore or any online comic or bookseller.

I would also mention that the critically-acclaimed first book, Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom, is available from the aforementioned outlets.

To get your copy, simply click the wickedly-cool cover image below. When you get to the download page, click the bubble next to Download Files to my Computer and then click the Download button. Too easy.

Thank You For Your Continued Support

I mean that. I really do. Without each and every one of you, I would not be able to do what I love. You have my deepest and most sincere gratitude. Thank you.

I’ll write more later, but now I must dive back in. *glub*

Give the Gift of Lovecraft This Christmas

In anticipation of the February 28th release of Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom, I have decided to make an exclusive offer to YOU, my dear readers and friends.

For the month of December, I am offering signed copies of Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom at the special rate of $15 each (which includes shipping and handling) for readers in the Continental United States, and $20 for international orders. If you order two copies, you will only pay $5 for the second copy, and everyone who orders two copies gets a FREE third copy–all signed and delivered right to your door by a flesh-eating shoggoth (they can change their appearance, you know).

Rebecca and I have three wonderful sons, ages 15, 13 and 11. When I received the box of books in the post, each of them asked for their own copy. So trust me: this is the perfect gift for the young people or the young at heart on your Christmas list!

What The (Grown-Up Type) People Have Said

Julia Keller of the Chicago Tribune said that Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom is a “splendid new graphic novel,” and called it a “sumptuously illustrated, cleverly written and deeply haunting novel.”

Publisher’s Weekly said the book will, “appeal to younger readers, who should find the plot’s twists and turns and the young protagonist appealing.”

Booklist said: “Grumps… will not be comforted by the modern plot arc and the constant quipping, but even they will appreciate the upsetting twist ending and the haunting final panel.”

Shroud Magazine gave Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom 5 stars and said that the book “shows us a NEW vision of Howard Lovecraft: precocious, whimsical, witty – maybe even a bit snotty – and hopeful, relatively untainted by the inevitable burden of ‘awful, unknowable things.'”

You can also check out a preview of the book HERE.

After visiting his father in Arkham Sanitarium, young Howard Lovecraft ignores his father’s warning and uses the legendary Necronomicon to open a portal to a strange frozen world filled with horrifying creatures and grave danger!

Simply send an e-mail with your mailing address and the number of copies you would like to order to howardlovecraft(dot)comic(at) and we will take it from there. I should also say that supplies are extremely limited, so it will be first come first served.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS from me and my family to you and yours, my friends! And be sure to keep an eye out for those flesh-eating, mail-delivering shoggoths (and Krampus, too)!

Blog Exclusive: Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom Cover Reveal

Good Friday morning, my friends! As usual, I am buried beneath a ton of work, hanging precariously above the abyss of derangement by the tips of my tentacles. But I wanted to pause for a moment and share the cover of the highly-anticipated sequel to Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom.

So here it is…

This amazing piece was illustrated by the ridiculously-talented Erik Fokkens, and I think it is breathtaking. (Get it? He’s underwater. Glub, glub.)

Well, the Old Ones are protesting that I am not holding up my end of the bargain and the Earth is looking more and more delectable with every passing moment I am away, so I must sign off for now. Thank you for reading, and I’ll share some exciting news with you very soon. (Okay… I’m coming! Take your bloody tentacles off Pohnpei!)

A New Original Short Story To Tickle Your Lovecraftian Fancy

My good friend and writing mentor (yes, Amy, you are!) Dr. Amy H. Sturgis is featuring a never before seen short story written by Dwight on her blog today!

I know I tend to brag on my talented husband somewhat, and I will continue to do this, but he truly is prolific. He is always writing something or thinking about writing something. And new ideas even come to him when he’s in the middle of writing something entirely different!

Clue: This story has nothing whatsoever to do with Sweeney Todd. I just like the illustration.

When Dwight showed me this twisted little tale, I immediately thought of Amy and her amazing group of Lovecraft fans. The thing about Howard Lovecraft: you either like him or you don’t. Despite the massive amount of stories he produced in his career, he is still not respected as much as he should be for his contributions to literature, and I think that is a shame.

But that is my two cents worth. Enjoy the story!

Blog Exclusive: Another Awesome Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom Teaser

Happy Friday, my dear friends! I hope you have a productive, safe, and sane work day.

This concludes one of the most insane writing weeks I’ve had in quite some time, so this will be a short note. The good news: the week flew by.

Totally unrelated, but has ANYONE actually been able to complete the e-mail submission process on J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore site?! My… uh… my sons were wondering.

Moving right along, I wanted to share another fabulous Howard Lovecraft teaser with you, so here goes…

TOMORROW: Rebecca will post a short entry that you DO NOT WANT TO MISS, so please be sure to check back after 9AM EST. And, as always, thank you for reading, and feel free to comment and share this exciting teaser!

H.P. Lovecraft, a Revolutionary Hero… and My Darkest Secret

Hello again, my friends. Sorry for the lapse in blog posting, but I’ve been extremely busy. I will have some exciting news to share in the near future, but, for now, a blog exclusive sneak peek from the upcoming Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom and a couple other things I believe merit a mention on my blog will have to suffice.

Let’s Get it Started

Here. Here is a sneak peek at Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom…

Illustrated by Thomas Boatwright

PISTOLFIST: Revolutionary Hero

My good friend J.S. Earls approached me a couple years ago with several story ideas. One of the pitches which captured my imagination and showed the most promise–in my opinion–was the idea of a superhero story in the Revolutionary War-era United States starring a runaway slave and Founding Father Benjamin Franklin.

Yes, seriously!

Over the course of the next few months, J and I tossed around ideas until Salem Attucks emerged as a character with a rich background, explained the origin of his powers, plotted and fleshed out a coherent story, and scripted and edited a three issue mini-series.

Now, I am happy to announce that this groundbreaking alternate-history superhero story is being collected in trade paperback format by Arcana Studio! Check out this amazing trailer JS put together…

It is now available from your friendly neighborhood comic shops and traditional/online bookstores, so please support indie comics and order your copy TODAY!

The Truth is Out There

Talented artist, musician and friend Mark Bell–better known as Tribal Gothic–has learned my deepest, darkest secret.

It happened one dark and stormy night…

Adieu For Now

Thank you for reading, dear friend. Please feel free to share a link to the blog, and do stand by for a couple of exciting announcements!

Blog Exclusive: Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom Sneak Peek #2

As many of you know, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom, written by yours truly and fellow scribe and best friend Bruce Brown, is well into production.

Well, I’m delighted to say that the rendering stage is nearing completion. Only one chapter of sequentials remains to be illustrated, and then the book will be lettered. After that, it’s off to the publisher for solicitation and printing.

In short, we anticipate wrapping up production on Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom by the middle of June!

After the completed files are sent to the publisher, I will ask a large favor of YOU.

But I mustn’t get ahead of myself.

Show Me The Art

As you may have guessed, this book reunites the creative team behind the Harvey and Eagle Award nominated The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo Book 1. Yes, indeed. Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom is illustrated by none other than the sensational Thomas Boatwright!

Back to Work

I apologize for the short blog update, but I have a looming deadline. Words must be transformed, and snipped, and replaced. And still others must be completely obliterated.

But fear not, I have my wand at the ready and I am more than prepared for the challenge.

So thank you for reading, and please feel free to share!

Blog Exclusive: Sneak Peek at Howard Lovecraft and The Undersea Kingdom

It’s Coming…

I am proud to announce the sequel to the criticallyacclaimed Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom is well into production! And, whereas I served as the copy editor on the first book, I have co-written this installment with Bruce Brown.

Have You Read the First Book?

While it is not imperative that you read Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom before diving into the sequel, I strongly recommend doing so. Our publisher has notified us that the initial print run is almost sold-out, but you may yet purchase a copy at an online retailer. Your local bookshops (Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, etc.) can also order copies–but make haste, as they are very nearly gone!

Sneak Peek

Without further adieu…

Sneak Peek from Howard Lovecraft & the Undersea Kingdom

We do not have a release date as of yet, but I will let you know as soon as we are notified by our publisher.

Work, Work, Work

Please feel free to share the sneak peek and spread the word about the sequel. In fact, I’d greatly appreciate it if you did. We have a small publisher, so we will not get the PR love the “Big Boys” offer their clientele.

Well… I am up to my tentacles in writing, research, worldbuilding and editing work, so I’ll get back to it. Thank you for reading!

A Madness Break

Taking a short break from writing to share a cool link.

Fantasy Flight Games has created a board game titled Mansions of Madness. As a huge H.P. Lovecraft and Dungeons & Dragons nerd, this looks to be right up my dark, twisted alley.

Check out this wonderful game play video…

Incredible, right?

All right, I’m getting back to work. I do not wish to anger my Elder Boss (Mr. C’s a bit cranky when he wakes up).
